French
In S1 and S2, pupils are taught French in mixed
ability classes. They start to develop the four language skills
of reading, listening, writing and speaking. In S3, pupils are organised
into ability classes according to how they have performed in S1
and S2. Most pupils continue with French to Standard grade level
as part of the core curriculum.
Spanish
Pupils can opt to pick up Spanish as a second
foreign language in S3. They will have two years to complete the
Standard Grade course, therefore they will enjoy the challenge of
a brisk pace. The Spanish course structure is the same as the French,
meaning that pupils are well used to the teaching methods as well
as to the standards expected.
A large percentage of the year group opt to continue
their study of language to Higher grade, mindful of the importance
of having a foreign language to enhance future study and career
opportunities.
Many universities require the study of a foreign language
at some stage. It is also now generally accepted that a working
knowledge of a foreign language gives job applicants an added edge
when they are seeking employment.
Pupils with well-developed skills in learning vocabulary
at Standard Grade level usually perform well at Higher level. Please
note that 50% of the overall grade is based on material that can
be prepared and learned in advance.
